Djibril is a Ph.D. student supported by the IPM CRSP in Senegal. He started his program in spring 2009 at the University of Dakar
at Thies under the supervision of co-advisors Saliou N’Diaye (University of Dakar) and Jim Westwood (Virginia Tech). Djibril’s project is titled, “The Role of Weeds in Harboring Whitefly and Whitefly-Transmitted Viruses in Senegal.” He is currently based in the Southern Senegal city of Kolda, which will serve as his base for research efforts. There he will take on the responsibility of managing the inventory of weeds associated with vegetable crops in Senegal and conduct studies into which weed species are hosts of whiteflies and the Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl (TYLC) virus. The research will lead to development of a database of weeds of vegetable crops that will be cross-linked to white fly population data to track potential non-crop reservoirs. This information will provide an essential resource for the implementation of integrated strategies for pest management. The research in Senegal will coordinate with similar efforts by project colleagues in neighboring countries to develop a regional model.
